14 Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!
15 The Lord has taken away your punishment, He has turned back your enemy.
The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.
16 On that day they will say to Jerusalem,
“Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp.
17 The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you,
but will rejoice over you with singing.”
The book of Zephaniah may be reviewed at The Bible Project on Zephaniah, it is just over five minutes long and provides a great summary. If you are looking for the reason for Jerusalem’s great joy – rejoicing with all your heart – look no further than verses fifteen and seventeen where The Lord is with you!
There is reason to celebrate as the punishment has been taken away, the enemy turned back, but incredibly He is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves! Not only is He with you, but He will take great delight in you, no longer rebuking you, but instead rejoicing over you with singing. What will God’s singing be like one wonders? Still, the point is there will be fellowship and communion between God and Israel resulting in God’s joy in man and man’s joy in God (MacLaren’s Expositions).
The same promises are made for those who await the final completion of the gospel. Just as we see a wondrous time for Israel, the same may be expected for the church when He will save – the He being Jesus who will save His people from their sins. However, as it was for Israel, before our time comes with Jesus there will be times of sorrow when as Christians we will be objects of rebuke and distain. Whatever troubles we may face we can always rejoice in God’s love and His promises.
The only way to know such joy and have such great expectations is to know Jesus as our Lord and Savior for He was sent by our Heavenly Father to offer us the free gift of Grace on the cross paying the price in full for our sins.
It is something worthy of contemplation, how great God’s love is for us that He would send His Son for us, to pay the price for our sins so we might be able to look to spend eternity with Him in heaven.
1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, 3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4 For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
2 Corinthians 5:1-5
