Revelation 2:21-22 NIV
21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.
22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.
Comment.
Jesus is now addressing the fourth church found in chapter two, the church of Thyatira. As with the other churches He begins with what they are doing right, 18b These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.
Then comes what must be corrected or avoided, 20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
But this is followed by praise for those who have refused to go the way that Jezebel teaches, 24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, 25 except to hold on to what you have until I come.’
With all this in mind let’s return to our verses for today. First, I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. Despite all of her sin He has given her time to repent which implies He has given her a warning about the evil she is involved in. Her sin, by the description given, was great and covered a long period of time and she chose not to repent. What happens when her time for repentance runs out? His judgment happens as described in the very next verse, So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways.Suffering also comes for those who followed her and refused to repent, but as with her, they too will have an opportunity to repent. We all know what sexual immorality is. And those who promote it under whatever guise within the church will have an opportunity to repent as well as those who followed the sexual sin that was promoted.
Bottom Line: Don’t promote sin and don’t follow those who do.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Help us to always keep sin out of our churches no matter what the world is doing all round us. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
