Verses of the Day – March 1, 2022

March 01, 2022 – Tuesday

Colossians 1:12-14    NIV

12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Colossians 1:12-14    NRSV

12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.

13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Comment.

Two versions are given above to show that qualified may also be enabled and further the inheritance of his holy people may also be the inheritance of the saints. I was surprised to find some versions separate v12 from verses 13-14 with a header as they clearly belong together. Many versions have a note after the word redemption in verse 14 reading in or through His blood, but only a few included the phrase.

For context the verses leading up to our Verse of the Day, Paul writes, For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience. So Paul is praying for those in the Church of Colossae and believes they (and we) should be giving thanks, joyful thanks, to the Father who has made it possible for us to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. How did He enable or qualify us to share in this inheritance? He made the gospel of Jesus available to us and upon accepting Jesus we become enabled or qualified!

Thus, the next two verses tell us that in becoming enabled or qualified we have been rescued from darkness and have entered into the kingdom of Jesus, 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Jesus spoke of it this way from Matthew 26:27-28, Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Rescued by and through His blood.

Once again we are reminded it was the blood of Jesus that rescued us from the darkness that we were part of and it is His light that makes it possible for us to live in the kingdom of light, His kingdom.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for making it possible for me to enter the kingdom of light, the kingdom of Your Son Jesus. And to look forward to eternity in His kingdom as well. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
