Proverbs 6:10-11   NIV

10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

I have used these two verses often when counseling young men or women about their work and work careers. I have spoken of the value of ‘showing up.’ So few people seem to show up every day and on time. Someone who shows up every day and on time is someone that is depended upon eventually.

Then I speak to them about the value of spending an additional 15 minutes on the job after they have clocked out for the day. That adds up to an hour and 15 minutes per week. During that time they can see much of what else goes on, they can ask questions about why and how certain things are done. By the end of the year that amounts to 62.5 extra hours assuming two weeks off and no holidays. What good is that you might ask? By the end of the year you will have more knowledge about the how and the why of the job than any of the other workers who kit the end of their shift and can’t wait to leave. Also, once again management and supervisors will notice and respect what you are doing as well.

Let’s look at verse 10 above, 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and you will ascertain what I have suggested is the opposite of this verse. Now let’s look at verse 11, a continuation of verse 10, 11 and poverty will come on you like a thiefand scarcity like an armed man. So very true, for the man or woman who sleeps a little late and as a result gets to work a little late is not the one who will be depended upon to get the job done with the expectation to be there every day. And when hard times come and layoffs, well that is when poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Not sure about the advice and the verses given? Then try out the following verses as well in Proverbs.

10:4 – Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.

13:18 – 18 Whoever disregards discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored.

14:23 – 23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

And that is only a beginning as there are plenty more in Proverbs and in Psalms

Bottom Line: Proverbs has a great deal of practical advice if we will but seek it out and follow it.

Prayer: Almighty God, Thank You not only for Salvation, but for so much practical advice in Your word. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
