Verse of the Day – Sep. 7, 2023

September 07, 2023 – Thursday

James 4:4-6   NIV

You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

James 4:4-6   ESV

You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Comments

Once again, we find God truly favors the humble. But how do we get there?

We get there by looking first at verse 4, You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Here adulterous people refer to those who are being unfaithful to the covenant they have with God. They are choosing the values of the world over the values and the blessings they have from God. In doing so, they are in rebellion against God and become enemies of God. We all do it at one time or another, choosing to do something that we know without question is contrary to God’s will. The problem arises when it happens with regularity, and it becomes a way of life.

How does God feel about such adulterous behavior? We are told clearly in verse 5, NIV Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? ESV Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?  If you are not sure how to take this verse, consider, 1 Corinthians 6:19, 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own and 2 Corinthians 6:16a, 16a What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God as well. God gave up His only Begotten Son to have this covenant with us that is sealed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God always longs for us to return to Him and to keep the covenant He has made with us when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Then we end with verse 6, But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” If and when we turn back to Him, He extends grace to us once again and welcomes us home. Who comes home to God? Only the humble because only they give up their pride and arrogance thus ending their rebellion against God and His will for us.

Bottom Line: We can end the misery in our lives by ending our rebellion against God and humbling ourselves to live within His will. If we do not, He will oppose us in our pride, but if we do He will grant us favor and grace once again.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your incredible long suffering patience and loving mercy is overwhelming. Thank You for so many blessings in our lives. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
