1 Peter 5:10 NIV
10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Comment
Peter begins this verse with the God of all grace, by which we may ascertain God is the source of all the favor and blessings we receive. All mercy, compassion, and free unmerited goodness that we experience, He is the source. And He is the source of all that the Holy Spirit effects in our thinking and decision making as well. Even in the opening of our hearts to the reality of His spiritual life and peace therein.
For those who have accepted the gift of salvation through Jesus, He has called you to his eternal glory in Christ. As individuals who have accepted Christ we are called to God’s eternal glory in Christ. However, this follows after you have suffered a little while. How long is the little while? We are not told but its association with eternal glory tells us it is minuscule in comparison with eternity.
Along with suffering a little while, God Himself will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. It is as if God is looking at someone’s suffering and saying “Hang in there. Just endure. I will restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.” This makes me think of a song we heard this past Sunday, It was Is Well, It Is Well With My Soul. One version of it online may be found here among many. I know people for whom this has been true, others who are going through it and the suffering is not desired, but their faith remains steadfast. My hope and prayer is that when my time comes to suffer, I will be able to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul.”
Bottom Line: Be prepared should your time of suffering come and know God has your back. The suffering will end and eternal joy will begin in a little while.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank you for the encouragement You provide us through Peter’s words. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
