Colossians 2:18 NIV
18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.
Colossians 2:18 NET
18 Let no one who delights in false humility and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind.
Colossians 2:18 KJ21
18 Let no man beguile you of your reward by feigned humility and worshiping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, being vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Colossians 2:18 NKJV
18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
The term false humility is rare in the Bible, found in only two verses, but not in all translations for example in our verse for today. I have included one version that does not but comes close above – the KJ21 which has feigned humility. Others have mock humility, ascetic practices, make a show of acting humble, insisting on asceticism, voluntary humility, pretending they aren’t proud, insisting on self-abasement, and that to be humble you must worship angels among many others.
The point is there will be and are all kinds of people who will want to deny you what you have in Christ Jesus. I will give one example of context below, but you may see context for three translations here. In the NIV we have:
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
Now looking at our Verse of the Day, Paul is attacking the Colossian heresy that involved strange practices including the worship of angels. In fact, the worship of angels is in itself a form of false humility acting as if an intermediary is necessary or required between believers and Jesus. Further, those who would teach such things would put themselves on a level with the angels so they should be looked up to and followed.
Such teachings continue to this day. Some churches will tell you that you cannot be saved in any other church. Some churches will tell you that you cannot be saved unless you speak in tongues. Others will tell you that you cannot be saved if you speak in tongues. For some churches there is a requirement for tithing, for others a dress code has to be followed. For others a particular translation of the Bible must be used and any other is heresy. And indeed, each of them to some degree becomes puffed up by the particular choices or doctrines granting little or no grace to others.
Bottom Line: Jesus is the goal, the treasure, knowing Him as our Lord and Savior. Be humble in knowing what He did to save us from our sins.
Prayer: Almighty God, Help us always to focus on You and Your Son, our Lord and Savior and not to be puffed up by our own practices or doctrines. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
