Verse of the Day – Oct. 13, 2023

October 13, 2023 – Friday

John 3:5-7   NKJV

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

John 3:5-7   NET

Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all be born from above.’

Yesterday we left off with Nicodemus asking in astonishment and confusion, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born? That was after Jesus stated, I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Today’s verses are Jesus’ answer to Nicodemus’ question in verse 4.

Jesus did not let up in His reply and began withMost assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. This was surely intended to bring to Nicodemus’ mind what Ezkiel heard from the Lord in 36:25-27, 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. That sounds so much like what we hear today and think of being ‘born again’ as well. And if that were not enough, it should bring to mind, Jeremiah 31:31-33, 31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Then at the end of verse 34 we read these truly prophetic words, 34c For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more

It is no wonder Jesus continued withThat which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ You (Nicodemus) know this, That which is born of the flesh is flesh and now you should recall the scripture Jesus is pointing you towards and know, that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. None of this should cause you to be amazed at my words or cause you to marvel at what I (Jesus) have said to you.

Jesus did not equivocate, 7b You must be born again. Emphasis added. And we will get to the end of this next week. Have a Great Weekend.

Bottom Line: Just as Nicodemus had to be ‘born again’ so must all of us individually be ‘born again.’

Prayer: Almighty God, Thank You that the blessing of being born again was extended not only to Jews, but to Gentiles as well so that we can all look forward to eternity together in heaven. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
