Matthew 5:16    NKJV

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

The above verse is from Jesus. He had just finished speaking on what we call the Beatitudes in verses 3-12. Then He begins from verses 13-16 on how believers are salt and light.

For context the verses are, 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. It is easy to see verses 14 and 15 clearly go with verse 16.

So why is it grouped with verse 13? Well in this verse we are told if the salt loses its flavorit is then good for nothing. I think what we see in verse 13 is an example of James 2:18, 18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. Remember you cannot have salvation but through faith, works cannot get you your salvation, only faith. But works will naturally follow salvation as you are a new creation as we learn in 2 Corinthians 5:17, 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

So, what is going on here? Let’s look at verses 14-15 that precede our verse of the day, 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Did you hide your change into a new creation? If so, your salt would lose its flavor. But you are not only salt, but light to the world and that light is not to be hidden just as A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do you take a lamp that is lit and put it under a basket. No, you put it on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

I believe our daughter was in her first year of college when I accepted Christ as my Lord and Savior. When she came home on break, she asked her mother, “Why is Dad so different?” I was much calmer, not nearly so prone to angry outbursts. Her mother replied, “Jesus.” Thus, in my own way, without trying, I was letting my light shine before men, and glorifying God in Heaven or as verse 16 says, 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. In my life Ephesians 5:8-10 was working out, For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord

Bottom Line: As believers we are not only to Walk as children of light, but we are to 16 Let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Let us do that all the time as a way of life especially now as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have given us the Light of Your Son Jesus. Help us to walk as Your children of His light. Thank You for all the blessings You have given us. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
