Verse of the Day – Nov. 23, 2023

November 23, 2023 – Thursday

Proverbs 23:23    NKJV

23 Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Also wisdom and instruction and understanding.

Proverbs 23:23    ESV

23 Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

Proverbs 23:23    TLV

23 Acquire truth and do not sell it, acquire wisdom, instruction and understanding.

Had not planned on posting today as it is or has been a day of Thanksgiving and I have (make that we have) so much to be thankful for, that the ability to address my Thanks to God is beyond me. I have so much that I am thankful for, as does my bride Sharon. For instance, going back to mid-late May 1971 Sharon gave me a matchbox with a small paper inside with the word Chance written on it. I had asked her a few days earlier for a chance to date her. Six or seven weeks later, I asked if she wanted to get married in one or two weeks. She said two weeks and on a Wednesday on July 27, 1971 we left Louisiana and got married in Marshall, Texas. I was 23 years old and she was only nineteen.

But how and why did I end up posting today and why the verse above. Well, after a grand meal with our Son and his wife (Jennifer) and a game of spades – they won …. barely, we came home. And I happened to listen to a speech of sorts by Tucker Carlson. It was about truth and lies and it was almost as if he were preaching. And that led me to the verse for this day of Thanksgiving.

Looking at this verse we are to buy or acquire (Tree of Life Version – Messianic Jewish Version) truthand we are not to sell it. In other words (my interpretation) we should have the mindset to deeply desire to get and know the truth of God and know that it is not something for sale. We don’t get it to make money from it. Instead. we do it to further buy or acquire wisdom, instruction, and understanding. The purchase price of this truth is giving up our arrogance, our pride, and our stiff-necked attitude. We become humble before God in doing so and in the process of giving up our arrogance, pride and stiff-necked attitude we also gain wisdom, instruction, and understanding.

The Pulpit Commentary says, Consider truth as a thing of the highest value, and spare no pains, cost, or sacrifice to obtain it, and, when gotten, keep it safe; do not barter it for earthly profit or the pleasures of sense; do not be reasoned out of it, or laughed out of it; “sell it not,” do not part with it for any consideration. Then it goes on to say, The second clause gives the sphere in which truth moves, or the three properties which appertain to it. These are: wisdom, practical knowledge; instruction, moral culture and discipline; and understanding, the faculty of discernment. Be aware all of this comes from God or as James 1:5 tells us, If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. And this is really pointing back to Proverbs 4:5&7, Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. And Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding

Bottom Line: Seek and get Godly truth and wisdom. Let the truth and wisdom gained, guide you in your walk following Jesus.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You this day of Thanksgiving. Help us to make every day a day of Thanksgiving for all the blessings You bring to us and especially the gift of grace through Your Son, our Lord and Savior. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
