6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
I am continually astonished by what is found in Psalms. This verse alone harkens back to Genesis 1:1, 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. How might this be you may ask, but let’s look at a few more verses from Genesis 1, 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God said! Then there is, 5a God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” God called! Next there is, 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” And God said! All that God said or called were extensions of His voice where our verse of the day simply says, 6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. By the word of the LORD, by the breath of His mouth!
Of course, this also fits what we read in John 1:1-4, 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The Word and God were One. Later in verse 14, John reveals Jesus is the Word made flesh, 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus and the Word were one and the same!
For more we have Colossians 1:15-17 talking about Jesus, 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Jesus was not only there at the beginning, but all things were created through and by Him. Further, He is the one holding all things together in the universe.
If we look at our verse with the very next verse we have, 6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Compare verse seven to this from Genesis, 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. And God said once again!
Jesus is our creator. And while fully man and fully God He chose to die for our sins so that we could have the choice of following Him or some false idol. He has since ascended into heaven. He will return as He says in Revelation 1:8,8 I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. He is not only the beginning and the end (Alpha and Omega), but the Almighty as well. As the Almighty, He has complete and total sovereign control over everything.
Bottom Line: The Psalms may reach back to Gensis and well into the New Testament, but they will always teach about and point us towards Jesus.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for showing us that Jesus can be found throughout Psalms. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
