19 Stand firm, and you will win life.

Comments

This is a belated Monday Verses of The Day. Monday I woke up with a terrible head/sinus cold and was taking meds all day and evening long and sleeping a great deal as well. Today it goes on, but greatly reduced. Thus, I am glad to be ‘back in the saddle’ and writing once again, getting Monday and Tuesday Verses of the Day out. Praise God!!

On Sunday June 12, 2022 Pastor Luke Stephens taught on Luke 21:5-19, ending with our Verse of the Day, but using the ESV 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. The following Sunday I started with Luke 21:19 and compared three versions of it as below:

19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. ESV

19 Stand firm, and you will win life. NIV

19 In your patience possess ye your souls. KJV

You may find these and variants on these here and here at biblegateway.com and biblehub.com respectively. I liked the word endurance and the word soulsbest in seeking to understand this verse. At biblehub.com the word translated endurance, stand firm, and patience was Strong’s 5281 (I transposed the 2 and the 8 in my notes for Sunday, my fingers sometimes have dyslexia) hypomonē, which was given the definition, Endurance, steadfastness, patient waiting for. From hupomeno; cheerful endurance, constancy. I did not mention Sunday that it came from hupomenocheerful endurance. I wish I had because we can endure cheerfully knowing our destination is Heaven with Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit.

I also really liked finding the word used at the end was Strong’s 5590 psuché defined as breath, the soul here. I liked it because if I put endurance and soul together we get, By your endurance you will gain your souls which is found in nine different versions of this verse here. From this version it is easy to say as I did on Sunday, “The point is to remain faithful because remaining faithful means continuing to trust in Jesus through all the ups and downs of life day in and day out. In doing so you will save your eternal soul.”

From that I tied 21:19 to 21:34 where Jesus said, Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. In other words, Endure, Stand firm, In your patience and in doing so, save your soul! Avoid the trap of letting the ups and downs of life choke out your faith as mentioned in the parable of the Seed Sower where, The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. We need to always remember 1 Peter 5:7, Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. All our anxieties upon Him, ALL!

Bottom Line: We can endure and do so cheerfully knowing we are going home one day while remembering not to let our faith be choked out by the trials and tribulations of day-to-day living.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Your love, Your patience, Your mercy all serve as examples to us as we wait to go to our permanent home. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
