2 Corinthians 4:2    NIV

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 4:2    NKJV

But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor [adulterating the word of God] handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

Comments

After Paul’s strong condemnation of those who peddle God’s word for gain or profit in 2 Corinthians 2:17, I was curious if Paul had more to say on the subject. Indeed, he did and here in chapter 4 verse 2, we read:

NIV Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

NKJV But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor [adulterating the word of God] handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

There can be doubt about Paul’s opinion of those who use secret and shameful ways or use deception or distort the word of God. Herenounced such acts. Renounce, using Strong’s Concordance, comes from the G550 apeipon which means to forbid, renounce. The sense here is to totally forbid such acts or behavior concerning the word of God. It also carries the meaning of disown implying disowning anyone who would behave in such a way as to adulterate the word of God. Note, the word is used only once in the New Testament, here in this verse.

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible tells us more about the word renounce, that the sense here is, that the apostles had such a view of the truth of religion, and the glory of the Christian scheme, as to lead them to discard everything that was disguised, and artful, and crafty; everything like deceit and fraud. And further noted, The religions of the pagan were made up mainly of trick, and were supported by deception practiced on the ignorant, and on the mass of people. He concluded by writing; Truth never needs such arts; and no cause will long succeed by mere trick and cunning. And that ties neatly with the second part of our verse for today, On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

In the same vein, Spurgeon had strong words for preachers, The preacher should either speak in God’s name or hold his tongue. My brother, if the Lord has not sent you with a message, go to bed, or to school, or mind your farm; for what does it matter what you have to say of your own? If heaven has given you a message, speak it out as he ought to speak who is called to be the mouth of God.

And when Paul wrote, we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God he was acknowledging the importance of doing what was right in the sight of God when it came to sharing the word of God. He knew he would have to answer to God for all his preaching. We too will have to answer for all of our words when sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

Bottom Line: Let us never choose to share something that is not the word of God and call it the word of God. Nonetheless, we should always be kind and loving when doing so for as Paul wrote in Galatians 5:6b, The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Help us to always share Your word in total truth while expressing our faith in love.. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
