Verse of the Day – Jan. 3, 2023

January 03, 20243 – Wednesday

1 Peter 1:3-4    NET

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you,

1 Peter 1:3-4    ESV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

1 Peter 1:3-4    NKJV

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

1 Peter 1:3-4    NIV

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,

Comments

Verse three is the verse I wished to comment on yesterday before Matthew 5:5 came to my attention and a new look at the word meekwithin it. Today verse four is included for context when we look at what verse three says in the NET and NIV versions above, He gave us new birth/He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The ESV has the same idea with He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead while the NKJV has He has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

So, the idea is that we are still close enough to New Year’s Day to think on this as without Jesus we would not have any real new and living hope and it is only though Him that we have a new birth, a new beginning. And actually, this is good to think about every single day through the year, every year. Before looking back up at the verses ask yourself, “Why did He did this?” The answer is because of His great or abundant mercy! This is a mercy we neither earned nor deserved, yet God the Father grants us this great mercy.

This new birth, this being born again is much greater than we may realize. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:17, 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. And again, in Galatians 6:15, 15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. In this new birth Peter wrote about, Paul tells us we are new creations. New, as in original, as in starting out fresh once again. New, brand new!

Bottom Line: As you wrap you mind around this word NEW, use this start of a new year to commit your new self to living as God wishes you to live. For guidance use what Paul said in Galatians 5:6, For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

Prayer: Almighty God, Thank You so much for Your great mercy in giving us a new birth through You Son Jesus. He became our Savior and Lord because of Your mercy. We are so very grateful. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
