Isaiah 55:8-9 NET
8 “Indeed, my plans are not like your plans, and my deeds are not like your deeds,” says the Lord, 9 “for just as the sky is higher than the earth, so my deeds are superior to your deeds and my plans superior to your plans.
Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
There are independent couplets throughout Proverbs. Yesterday we looked at one of them, Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV), 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths thought to be written in the tenth century BC. Today’s verses from Isaiah 55 were written some two centuries later. Today’s verses are often treated as a couplet but are part of the twelve verses that make up chapter thirteen.
Nonetheless, today’s two verses complement Proverbs 3:5-6. Reading them (NIV), 8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts, we can see how they would back up, 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding. After all we are being told we cannot think and have thoughts like those of God. His way of thinking and literally His ways are not like our ways. Then to add weight to this reasoning we have (NKJV), 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Look at the next two verses in Isaiah 55 (ESV), 10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. We may have no idea what is the reason for which He sent it. And is it possible the reference to my word is about Jesus? The Word made flesh as in John 1:14a (NET), 14 Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us.
In the final verse of Isaiah 55 we have (NKJV), 13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; And it shall be to the Lord for a name, For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” Even when His thoughts and ways are beyond our understanding, He chooses to reveal Himself by things we can look at and appreciate.
Bottom Line: Just as I finished the above, I received the phone call that my brother-in-law Frank Abbey passed away ten minutes ago. He fell 15 days ago and then brain cancer was discovered. And now he is gone. He was one of the finest men I have ever known. I don’t know why God chose to take him home at this time, but I trust in Him and His ways. It is my hope to see Frank one day in the eternity of heaven. Prayers for his wife, my sister Carolyn, and their family.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Help us in our time of loss to maintain our trust in You. Thank You for the 42 years You gave Frank and Carolyn together. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
