Verse of the Day – Jan. 10, 2023

January 10, 20243 – Wednesday

1 Corinthians 2:6-10    NET

Now we do speak wisdom among the mature, but not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are perishing. Instead we speak the wisdom of God, hidden in a mystery, that God determined before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood it. If they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But just as it is written, “Things that no eye has seen, or ear heard, or mind imagined, are the things God has prepared for those who love him.” 10 God has revealed these to us by the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:6-10    NKJV

However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

Comments

Finally, we come to 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 although yesterday we covered the quote from Isaiah 64:4 found in verse nine (in italics above). If you would also like to see these verses in the NIV and ESV, you can find them here alongside the NET and the NKJV.

When I look at verse six, However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing, I can see how it would apply to rulers of almost any age as I know of none who were truly aware of God’s wisdom versus their own version of wisdom. That is a problem with almost all rulers as they are so self-involved with their own ideas, their own so-called wisdom, that they ignore God’s wisdom. It certainly seems to apply to the rulers of our own day.

Then we come to verses seven and eight which add great emphasis to this point when we read, But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. And the subject of the wisdom is revealed, Jesus. Today they not only ignore the wisdom of Jesus but ignore Him as much as possible. Who does not ignore Him? Verse six said those who are mature. And who are those who are mature? That would be those who have rejected the wisdom of this age, this time, for the wisdom of Jesus and the reason He came to us.

And next we have verse nine which has Isaiah 64:4 and verse ten, But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. Paul is telling us what Isaiah had written centuries earlier was about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Somehow, someway, God reveals the truth of Jesus through His Holy Spirit to those of us who choose to believe.

Bottom Line: Be careful about your maturity in believing. Remember Jesus said in Luke 18:17, 17 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it. In these verses we find the Old Testament is the New Testament concealed while the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for revealing so much of Yourself and Your Son to us so that we receive Him, as a little child would, as our Lord and Savior through Your wisdom from long ago. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
