John 6:35-36     NIV

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.

This is a continuation of the discussion that started in verses 28-29, covered on Tuesday with an Addendum on Wednesday where we had, 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” Jesus could not have been clearer, but their questions continued with 30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? They want more signs and wonders, will there ever be enough? And then 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave  them bread from heaven to eat.’” Now they bring up Moses, but Jesus corrects their thinking with, 32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Again they did not understand and said, 34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

And we come to our verses for today where Jesus sets them straight once again, 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. Here it is boiled down to two basic points, whoever believes in me will never be thirsty and those who have seen me and still you do not believe. We see this all the time in our own experiences. We have satisfaction and peace in our lives as believers that we share with others. Especially when our lives were full of problems and selfish ambitions which no longer exist as we no longer thirst for such that caused so many of the problems. Many of those we share this with have seen the changes in our lives and in the lives of other believers and they believe as well. Yet others still do not believe or better stated, they refuse to believe.

The people Jesus is addressing have seen the miracles of Jesus firsthand or have certain knowledge of them, yet they refuse to believe. And after Jesus summed up what awaits believers with the following statement, 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day, all they could do was grumble and say, 42 “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” Jesus addressed their unbelief one more time stating, 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life.Believing in Jesus we have received Him as our Lord and Savior and the judge of all mankind. We have committed our souls and all of our spiritual matters to Him by believing in Him.

Bottom Line:  Jesus is our bread of life and because we believe we will never hunger nor thirst as foretold in Isaiah 49:10, 10 They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, Please help us to continually grow in our knowledge and belief in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
