Verse of the Day – Dec. 27, 2023

December 27, 2023 – Wednesday

1 Samuel 15:22    ESV

22 And Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

1 Samuel 15:22    NKJV

22 So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.

1 Samuel 15:22    NIV

22 But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

Comments

There is so much truth in this single verse that we can take it and live by the truth in it without context. However, context will help make the truth in the verse even stronger. What we read in the verse above is Samuel’s reply to Saul when Saul explained what he had done. Here we have Saul speaking to Samuel (NKJV), 20 But I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.

Did you get that? Saul obeyed God, well except for when he did not by letting the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal. Samuel was quick and to the point with his response (NIV), 22 Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. The key phrase, the takeaway from this is To obey is better than sacrifice.

You may think that is overstated but consider how Samuel amplified his reply to Saul. In the next verse he stated (NKJV), 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.” Sacrifice without obedience is like rebellion, like stubbornness leading to iniquity and idolatry, and rejection of God Himself. Again, the takeaway from this is To obey is better than sacrifice.

Guzik had this to say, One could make a thousand sacrifices for God, work a thousand hours for God’s service, or give millions of dollars to His work. But all these sacrifices mean little if there is not a surrendered heart to God, shown by simple obedience. In sacrifice we offer the flesh of another creature; in obedience we offer our own will before God. We can when we want to, find all kinds of reasons not to obey when it suits our purposes, but they are all meaningless as they demonstrate you have a heart that is not surrendered to God.

Bottom Line: Surrender your heart to God and obedience will follow.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for such an important truth in so few words. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
