Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 NET
6 For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called Wonderful Adviser, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
You may be forgiven if you read the above verse and think it comes from the New Testament, but it does not. It comes from the book of Isaiah written over 700 years prior to the birth of Jesus. Yet Isaiah prophecies the birth of Jesus the Christ. Later in chapter 53, Isaiah prophesied the death of Jesus. Here are two verses from Isaiah 53:5-6 (NKJV), 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions,He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. The chapter is only twelve verses long, you may read it here.
New Testament references to His birth are in Matthew 1:1 which gives His genealogy as the son of David and the son of Abraham, then in Matthew 1:23 we read, “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”). Then in Luke 2:11 we have, Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord! And in John 3:16, we have, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
With the above in mind let us look at the beginning of Isaiah 9:6, 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given. This gives us amazing information! The Messiah would be a man, not an angel or God without being a man. The child had to be birthed! So, the Messiah would come as a human. And as John 1 tells us, 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was with God in the beginning. Then in verse 14, 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Guzik writes, There is nothing weaker, more helpless, more dependent than a child. Theoretically, the Messiah could have come as a fully-grown man, created as an adult even as Adam was created. But for Jesus to fully identify with humanity, and to display in His life the servant nature that is in God (Philippians 2:7) He made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. When the child was born the humanity of Jesus is given a known starting point. Before this, humanity was not part of His identity, His deity.
With His birth a spiritual explosion began that culminated with His death on the cross and three days later His resurrection. And then again when the Holy Spirit fell on 120 disciples in the upper room during Pentecost as described in Acts 2:1-12 here whereupon they spoke to many in their home languages and after Peter preached 3,000 were saved.
The effects of this explosion continue to this day. The reverberations are still being felt which is one reason we celebrate the birth of Jesus even though we do not know the actual date. Some seek to have Christmas without Christ and instead say “X-mas.” Obviously, they do not know that Christ in the Greek looks like this, Χριστός meaning Christ or Christos, the Anointed One. And the X in “X-mas” is simply shorthand for Christ! This has led me to wonder if one of the richest and smartest men in the world knew this when he changed the name of a company he purchased to “X” … really I wonder if he knew.
Bottom Line: The birth of Jesus was prophesied 700 years prior to His birth, and He came as a gift to mankind so each man and woman would have the opportunity to have salvation and spend eternity in heaven.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, You gave us a path to salvation through Your Son as a free gift if only we would only believe. Help us to share that gift with others in our life. Thank You. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
