Deuteronomy 32:28-34    NIV

28 They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!
30 How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight,

unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up?
31 For their rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede.
32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness.
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras.

34 “Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults?

Comments

Only presenting these seven verses in the NIV format today, but you may see them in the NIV, NET, and NKJV formats here side by side. And I do implore you to listen to The Song of Moses Pt 4 (set to music) as it will add meaning to the verses. This is especially true when you see verse 29 given two additional times as a chorus, once after verse 31 and then again after verse 34. That is a commentary of sorts in its own way.

Looking first at verse 28, 28 They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in them as above. Again, in the NKJV, 28 For they are a nation void of counsel, Nor is there any understanding in them. They do not have the wisdom to even direct themselves, nor the discretion to want or listen to counsel from others, but they thoughtlessly and incredibly go on courses of action which will lead them to ruin. To me this sounds like our country at the present time.

Now verse 29, 29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be! Sadly, far too many are only interested in the here and now and have no thought or discernment concerning what their end will be. Then as now Satan was successful in convincing them there was no afterlife. If only they would think and take counsel.

Verses 30-31, 30 How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up? 31 For their rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. Turning their back of God results in God turning His back on them. It is then that Leviticus 26:8 is effectively reversed, Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight; your enemies shall fall by the sword before you. Perhaps this is why verse 29 is here repeated in The Song of Moses Pt 4 (set to music)29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!

Now verses 32-34, 32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are filled with poison, and their clusters with bitterness. 33 Their wine is the venom of serpents, the deadly poison of cobras. 34 “Have I not kept this in reserve and sealed it in my vaults? These are the last of the new verses in Part 4 of the Song of Moses and they tell the story of how far Israel had fallen. They have fallen so far from God, it is as if they are literally from the vine of Sodom and from the fields of Gomorrah. As such it is no surprise their grapes are filled with poison and their clusters with bitterness. In such people there is no grace, no discernment, no wisdom. Thus, their wine is full of venom and poison, just as their lives are full of the same. And Part 4 of the song repeats v29 here once again, 29 If only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!

Bottom Line: We need to heed verse 29 today in our lives. We need to be wise and understand what our lives will be like and be aware of what our end will be if we turn our backs on the Lord our God.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You used the Song of Moses to warn future generations of Isarel. Help us to take the same warning to heart as well. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
