Comment:
Luke 18:9 – “trusted in themselves” … The cure for self-righteousness in self-knowledge
“treated others with contempt” … not giving others what Christ has given you (Eph. 4:32)
Luke 18:10 – “to pray” … What is prayer? What is prayer for? Do I need to pray? (Jer. 33:3)
Luke 18:11 – “standing by himself” … You can be surrounded by God but not be in the presence of GOd
“not like other men” human nature is to compare ourselves to others instead of comparing ourselves to Christ (Rev. 3:17)
Luke 18:12 – “fast twice a week…give tithes” … People are deceived to believe in their deeds rather than believing in Christ
Luke 18:13 – “be merciful to me“…appealing to God alone for atonement of sin
“a sinner” … Having Having not only the awareness of our sin but the degree of our sin (Ecc. 7:20)
Luke 18:14 – “justified” … No longer a sinner but now a child of God
“exalts vs humbles” … the Pharisee stands before God in self-congratulation, the tax collector stands before God in prayer (Rom. 4:1-8)
