Temptation: an examination with the express purpose of producing (or proving) a fault in the examinee. – Bible Sense Lexicon

Luke 22:39“as was His custom”

Custom speaks of habit. Habit speaks of character. What is your character?

Luke 22:40“Pray that you may not enter into temptation”

This sentence is a command and at the same time a warning from Christ.

Luke 22:42“not my will but Yours be done”

Complete submission to God, Letting God fight your battles and direct your decisions.

“To suffer patiently for Christ is far more difficult than to work actively. To sit still and endure calmly is far harder than to fight a battle.” – J.C. Ryle

Luke 22:44“being in agony”

This was not a state of fear. Agony refers to the doctrine of imputed sin.

“This agony was not from fear of death, but from the deep sense of God’s wrath against sin, which He as our sacrifice was to bear, in greater pain than mere dying, which his servants often bear with peace.” – Richard Baxter

Luke 22:48“would you betray the son of Man with a kiss”

Wickedness comes in many forms. How do you betray the son of Man?

Luke 22:53-54“this is your hour and the power of darkness. Then they seized Him”

The time during which evil is permitted to triumph is fixed and limited by God.

Luke 22:61 – “the Lord turned and looked at Peter”

Jesus wanted Peter to know that evening his betrayal Jesus had not forgotten Him.

Luke 22:62 “he went out and wept bitterly”

Knowledge of sin should be convicting BUT NEVER defeating!
