Romans 14:1-21

Romans 14:1-21

Therefore let us stop passing judgement on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

Romans 13:14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Yeshua the Messiah; and don’t waste your time thinking about how to provide for the sinful desires of your old nature. CJB

Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate [or reflect] the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit NIV

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! NIV

metamorphosis defined – somebody or something that has gone through a complete or marked change.

14:1-4 Which comment describes you? “I just don’t understand the so and so; he or she is always doing something that common sense should tell them…” or “You know, when looking at so and so, we are all a little bit different or on a different level about…”

14:5-9 This is summed up nicely in Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

14:10-12 In verse eleven quotes Paul Isaiah 49:18a and 45:23b. Bottom line – don’t be a busybody, mind your own business AND take care of your own business. In most cases the words of Jesus in Luke 6:41 & Matthew 7:3 applies “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

14:13-15 Ever wonder why people want to tell you what’s best for you? You and I know sometime it is simply out of genuine concern, but other times it is simply arrogance. We forget that often times the only cure for someone’s inexperience is their own experience… sooner or later they will want to learn from others experience!

14:16-18 Frankly verse 16 kind of threw me with its Therefore so I was looking only at what would give us a Therefore instead of giving the rest of the verse a clear reading. …do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.
So, let’s look at this verse in different versions of the Bible

  • Let not your good be spoken of as evil KJ21
  • Do not let what you know to be good, be spoken of as bad CJB
  • So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil ESV
  • Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil NASB

14:19-21 I have some VERY STRONG opinions on a number of these things, but I am careful as to who it is I will argue with about them. So Frenchie and I end up doing some iron sharpening iron as we learn from each other. Proverbs 27:17

14:22-23 Mind your own business, but BE CAREFUL by what you approve and disapprove! You can condemn yourself by not practicing your faith. Change doubt to waver …

Are we willing to say “Jesus I am yours!” Or are we merely listening to the Word, but not putting it into practice as those in Ezekiel 33:30-32 “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.

Are we doing as we are told in James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
If we are doing what we are told the we are following Philippians 4:9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
