Do Not Conform, Serve the Body, Love not Hate

REVIEW: Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

12:2 Why are you here? Once you have made Jesus your Savior and your Lord you become a living sacrifice.
As a living sacrifice, learning how to be a non-conformist! Look at Romans 12:2 from NIV, BSB, and ESV. Do not conform! Be Transformed! WHY? So you may walk in the will of God and avoid walking outside the will of God. Read a quote from Alexander Solzhenitsyn (4th paragraph from the bottom) address to Harvard University in 1978.

12:3 The first transformation: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought. Think soberly of yourself with modesty and humility. Look upon even your faith as a gift from God to avoid pride and instead a feeling of gratitude.

12:4-5 The purpose of the transformation: To become part of the body of Christ – to make the body whole.
We belong to each other in various ways – Soup Sunday. It is the same as we find in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14

12:6-8 Discovering your gift after the transformation. Different gifts – all of us. The word for gifts is a derivative of the word for grace, so try reading as

We have different graces, according to the grace given to each of us.
If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if your gift is serving, then serve;
if your gift is teaching, then teach; if your gift is to encourage, then give encouragement;
if your gift is giving, then give generously; if your gift is to lead, do it diligently; if your gift is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

The next transformation We are still talking about gifts of grace here

12:9 If you are to walk in the will of God and avoid walking outside the will of God, you will LOVE and you will hate and you will cling to what is good. How do we do that? Philippians 4:8 is a good starting point.

12:10-20 The final? transformation – putting love into action
List of actions NO MATTER WHAT gifts you have received

  • Direct DO! v10-13 & v15, v18 are a list of Do’s
  • Direct DO and Direct DO NOT v14 and v16 tell us what to DO and what to DO NOT
  • DO NOT and DO v17&v19 reverse the order. v19 is derived directly from Deuteronomy 32:35a
  • Final Direct DO v20 quotes directly from Proverbs 25:21&22 let’s look at them in their entirety

The result of the transformation
12:21 (12:1-2 Back to verses 1&2) Now look to 1 John 2:13 for the same sentiment
Look further at 1 John 2:14 for an even greater understanding.
None of this is possible unless we live as living sacrifices and let ourselves be transformed. Can you imagine living this way without being transformed by your faith in the word of God? I cannot.
Are you ready to live as a living sacrifice and be transformed?

Same Question as last five weeks
Are we willing to say “Jesus I am yours!” Are we? If so and we are living sacrifices we WILL put the words of God into practice.
If so we will not be as those in Ezekiel 33:30-32

“As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.

Why are you here?
You are here to learn how to be a non-conformist! And a living sacrifice!
