REVIEW: The indwelling sin we all have is a tyrant whose dictates we hate and loathe like Paul. Like Paul, we struggle in vain by our own strength. So the problem boils down to his and our inability to win the war against sin. We want to do what is right, but find ourselves doing what we know is wrong.
7:24 So we all cry out in agony how wretched we are. We need to be rescued from our sins which are leading us directly to death. Who will rescue us?
7:25 There is only one who will rescue us – Jesus Christ. Why does it take time to complete the rescue to rid the body of sin? Because we knew very little of the mountain of corruption that was indwelling. Jesus and the Holy Spirit knew! But that didn’t stop them for He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus Philippians 1:6.
8:9 It is the Spirit alone, the Holy Spirit, who brings us into a living relationship with Christ – there can be no such relationship without the Spirit. We are fooling ourselves if we think otherwise.
8:12-18 We are to treat our former sinful practices as dead in relation to our new lives … in a sense we have crucified our old lives in the flesh with its passions and desires and now live our new lives as part of the fruit of the spirit. We can do this because being led by the Spirit of God we become sons of God! Thus we call God, Father as we call Jesus our Lord – both a token of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Through our suffering, whatever it may be, grow closer to Christ over time and share in His Glory.
As Christians over time we experience a spiritual evolution of sorts as we conform ourselves more and more to the image that is Jesus. Or as 1 John 3:2 says we shall be like him, for we shall see Him as He is.
8:18 It is difficult to perceive and accept when our suffering is great, but this is what scripture tells us. Jesus said much the same Luke 6:22-23 Blessed are you when men hate you … Rejoice … your reward is great in heaven
What is going on in Nigeria right now is an example of how great that hate can become – video here.
8:19-22 Not only man fell, but creation fell along with man Genesis 3:17, beginning with the earth
but the hope we have began in Genesis 3:15. The will of the one is the will of God.
8:23-24 The indwelling of the Spirit is the ‘first fruits’ or the ‘first installment’ of the eternal glory we look forward to experiencing and do so with such longing we groan inwardly as we wait for the resurrection of our bodies upon the return of Christ. As a result our hope of full enjoyment lies in the future.
8:25 Compare with John 21:29b when Jesus said “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
8:26 These groans cannot be separated from those in v23 where believers along all creation express their deepest longings for the glory of the coming resurrection.
8:27-28 We know expresses the knowledge of faith. This ties back to what Paul taught the Galatians 5:6b The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. This is especially true if you love God and find yourself called to His purpose – to have His will done in your lives – to do His will in your life.
8:28-30 There are also those He predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son. v30 those he predestined, he also called. Whether predestined or not we are to be conformed to the likeness of His Son which will be
8:31-34 When we come to God’s court our advocate – Jesus – sits at the right hand of God interceding for us.
8:35-36 Spiritually nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, but many will try here on earth as we saw in the video about the massacre in the Nigerian church where many were slaughtered as sheep.
8:37 Yet it did not matter, the daughter and the sister held onto their faith. The daughter said with great conviction, she will see her father again. I hope and pray our faith would be as strong. Wurmbrand held onto his faith while being tortured for over 10 years … others did not.
8:38-39 We are victorious because of the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
