Mother’s Day – May 14, 2023
David Guzik wrote, It is vain to wonder if men or women are superior to the other.
A man is absolutely superior at being a man. A woman is absolutely superior at being a woman.
But when a man tries to be a woman or a woman tries to be a man, you have something inferior.
I would add, not only inferior, but something contrary to God’s design. And it should go with saying, men are not women and women are not men … the chromosomes XX and XY tell the story in every cell of the body.
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
First man as in Genesis 2:7, 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Then the woman from the man’s rib in 20b-22, 20b But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Then came the following verses, 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Ever wonder why male and female were created last? Gill states, There is a Jewish teaching that man was made on the evening of the sabbath, to show he did not assist in the work of creation; and that if he was elated in his mind, it might be told to him that a fly was created before him. Definitely, a bit of humility is called for as a result.
Going back to Genesis 1:27, So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. The Pulpit commentary brings attention to the threefold repetition of created in the verse for today stating, The threefold repetition of the term “created” should be observed as a significant negation of modern evolution theories as to the descent of man, and an emphatic proclamation of his Divine original.
Proverbs 1:8 NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Proverbs 1:8 is the first part of a couplet with 1:9 providing the second part, 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. Your father’s instruction and your mother’s teaching form a garland about your head and a chain to ordain your neck! Clearly the teaching of wisdom was the responsibility of both parents. This is not about a literal garland or chain/necklace. Instead, if the child receives wisdom, it will be like a crown on the child’s head and like a chain of great value if the lessons are taken to heart and used as they enter adulthood and the rest of their life.
Proverbs 6:20 NIV 20 My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Proverbs 6:20 is also the first part of a couplet with 6:21 providing the next part, 21 Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. These are life lessons intended to keep you safe and lead you to enjoy a good life. Holding the lessons so close it is as if you were to tie them to your heart always and keep them around your neck. Why? To keep you out of trouble. In this case these form an introduction to avoiding adultery. One of the easiest ways to fall into sin and ruin your life in many ways.
It is Mother’s Day. Let us celebrate Mother’s Day, by honoring Mothers, Aunts, Sisters, and Daughters who were made in the image of God just as Fathers, Uncles, Brothers, and Sons were.
