Matthew 16:13-28

Matthew 16:13-28

Who do you say Jesus is? Is He your Santa Claus in the sky? Is He the One that you only turn to when you're in trouble or you want something? Or, is He now your Life Partner that you are going to walk with every moment of every day? Who do you say He is? That is the question I believe that each of us, every day, need to grapple with. It’s not about whether or not I’m good enough. I’m never going to be good enough. But it is about the fact that Jesus was good enough, and He saved me. So it doesn’t matter if I’m doing good things. God loves me… He loved the world, He loved you, He loved me, long before there was anything good in us, and the only thing good that ever came into us was the Person of Jesus when we asked Him in…

The only way to know whether you’re getting good teaching or not is to be in God’s Word yourself… You guys have the challenge to be aware, to be on your guard, to know that sometimes you may hear something that is bad or wrong, and guess what? The Holy Spirit of God Who is in you and the Bible that you have available to you will help you to know what’s good and what’s bad teaching…

It boils down to this. Who do you say that Jesus is? Is He your Santa Claus in the sky? Is He the One that you only turn to when you’re in trouble or you want something? Or is He now your life Partner that you are going to walk every moment of every day with into and through eternity? Who do you say He is? This is the question I believe that each one of us, every day, needs to grapple with. What do we believe about Him? Who do we say He is?…

What about you? Who do you say that the Son of Man is? Have you ever thought about that? I mean, really taken time to sit down and think about Who is Jesus to you? I think about it a lot, and as I’ve said, sometimes I fall short. Sometimes I find myself getting very busy, I find myself getting caught up in the things of the world, I find myself getting caught up in my own flesh, and then Jesus becomes to me an inconvenience, because He may want me to do something other than what I’m doing. He may require me to do a good when I want to do the bad…

Who is He to you? What does He mean to you? When do you call on Him? When do you talk to Him? When do you engage Him in your life in that day-to-day grind that you find yourself in? Is He there with you? Are you talking to Him through the day? Is He your Friend?… Have you ever stopped to think about the God of heaven Who created all that there is, could snap His fingers just like that and each and every one of us fall on our face in total submission to Him, totally and completely outside of our will — He could make us do it…but isn’t it amazing? He doesn’t do that because He desires to have friends. He desires to have love relationship that comes from choice on my part. He’s not going to force me. He never forces His creation. He offers His creation the choice. “But what about you? Who do you say I am?”

Who do we really believe that Jesus is? And, ultimately, are we His counselors? Yes, we think we are. I think I am every time I tell Jesus what He has to do in order to bless me. Every time I cry out to God because I don’t like what’s going on in my life. I don’t like the hardship that I’ve had to face, and I tell Him He’s wrong and that I need this or I need that, and if He would just do it this way, things would be better. We all find ourselves in that place of being God’s counselor…

And so it boils down to this. Who do you say Jesus is? Think about that this week. Who is Jesus to you? Is He just a convenience? Someone that you can ask for good things when you want good things? But if you’re ever inconvenienced by Him, you send Him packing? Who is Jesus to you?
