Matthew 12:39-13:15

Matthew 12:39-13:15

This is what we need to be telling people: You need a relationship with Jesus. It is not about doing good and feeling good. Feeling good is very temporary... But when you ask Jesus into your life, and that void is filled, that is permanent. You know how many people I’ve talked to who said, “Well, I’ll come to know the Lord one of these days when I’ve cleaned up my act. I’m just not ready right now.” Well, guess what? You’ll never come to the Lord, because you’ll never clean up your act, because you can never become clean enough to feel good enough to actually enter into relationship with Jesus. So, you decide, “Dirty or not, ready or not, here I come! Lord, I need You. I can’t do this on my own,” and you enter in love relationship. And if we are out evangelizing, this is what we need to be telling people: You need relationship with Jesus. It is not about doing good and feeling good. Feeling good is a very temporary emotional space you dwell in. Very temporary. But when you ask Jesus into your life, and that void is filled, that is permanent. And then when you don’t feel good, then when you are feeling particularly grungy because the world has rubbed off on you and you’ve dwelt too close to the muck and the scum of the world, He cleans you up! When you fall and you skin your knee, He picks you up and He takes care of it. When you blatantly sin against Him and you realized you’ve sinned against Him, and you say, “Lord, I’ve sinned against You. Forgive me,” He forgives you. And guess what? You’re not empty. You’re still full. And even when you found yourself in that place of separation, it was only separation in the heart, not in your life, because Jesus is dwelling there. He’s just reminding you, you need to come to that place of repentance and understanding His love once again…

When you come to know Jesus, guess what? If you have, you are His brother, not His slave, not His servant — though He may ask us to serve. You know what? Members of a family have to serve one another. Members of a family have to give up a part of their life to be a part of that family, so when Jesus asks us to serve and to love one another and to do things for one another, He’s not enslaving us as some have come to believe. Even some Christians, when you ask them what is it to be a Christian? Oh, it’s to be a servant. Well, that’s part of it. You know what it is to be a Christian? It is to be a brother to Jesus, a son to the God Who created you, adopted into His family, and given the blessings of the kingdom of God! That’s truly what it is to be a Christian. To be part of a family that will endure forever. Like I said, it’s crazy that I can call God, “Dad,” and I can call Jesus, “Brother,” while still sometimes having to get on my knees and on my face and bow before Him and worship Him because, in fact, He is still the King. It’s sometimes hard to deal with in our lives…

Why do you come to Jesus? What do you expect Jesus to give you? What do you expect to gain from a relationship with Jesus?… What do you expect to get out of Jesus? I know a lot of people who come to Jesus out of selfishness: selfish motives, selfish ambition… And I’, going to ask a question. Are you His disciple today? If you’re His disciple, then guess what? You’ve been blessed because your eyes are seeing and your ears are hearing and the truth is being offered to you.
