John 12:37-50

John 12:37-50

John 12:36Vintage message from our 2002-2003 radio program called “Perspective” aired June 8, 2003.

When Jesus went away, he went away for a short time. But He didn’t leave us alone. He gave us a light to dwell in us through the power of His Holy Spirit, so today we are without excuse as we live in this world. And I see so many Christians that live as though they are still lost in the darkness. They make decisions based on the flesh; they make decisions based on the things that make them feel good; make decisions based on what their friends are doing; make their decisions based on what their enemies are doing; make their decisions based on the standards of this world. But, they are proving their blindness…

This is what we hope to accomplish: to not only see the Light, not only to relate to the Light, but actually become sons of that Light. Have a life that exudes Light because the Spirit is indwelling us and shining actively through us so that in this dark world, even though the sun is shining, the deeds of mankind are exposed for what they are: sin against God…

I hear people say, “Well, Pastor Dave, if God would just show me a miracle, I would believe. If God would just prove Himself to me, then I would believe.” Well, let me tell you something. If God shot to this earth right now in a bolt of lightning, did backflips in front of you, and produced a car out of thin air, you would look more at the car than the God Who just presented Himself. You don’t believe because of miracles. It is not miracles that develops faith… And let me tell you something. If that’s what you’re looking for, it’s not going to be good enough for you because you’ll still doubt His motives. You’ll still question the direction He would have you to go. Our brother Paul tells us, “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” We need to be into the Word of God. We need to be trusting the Word of God. If you’re not studying God’s Word, if you’re not hearing God’s Word in your heart, if you’re not mulling through the Word of God in your mind, if you’re not experiencing the Word of God as you’re walking out in the world each day, then guess what? You’re not growing in faith. You faith is not being strengthened. And it is only when you are growing and being strengthened in faith because of God’s Word that when you see the miracle, you can then accept it as a miracle. Otherwise, it’s just another one of those coincidences that happen in life. It’s another one of those “lucky” moments, which I despise when I hear people say it. It is not by luck that we live. It is by God’s blessing and God’s love that we live…

Jesus came for a purpose: as a Light that shines on Who the Father is. He came as the representation of the Father. That doesn’t mean that God the Father looked like Jesus physically, but everything that Jesus did in His ministry represented the love of the Father, represented the kindness of the Father, represented what the Father wanted to do in involvement with us. How He cared for us. Jesus became that representation. He illuminated; became a Light shining on all that God wanted to do, and He did that so that “No one who believes should stay in the darkness.” He wants us to step out of that darkness.
