Jesus’ Final Teaching & Choosing Matthias

Jesus Final Teaching and Choosing Matthias

Acts 1:6-26–August 14, 2022

Review

Acts 1:1-5. Waiting means that it was/is worth waiting for. Waiting meant they had a promise to anticipate. Waiting meant they must receive it as they could not create it themselves.

Acts 1:6. Most natural question they could have asked, l for forty days Jesus had spoken about the kingdom of God.

Acts 1:7-8. Times from the Greek chronous. Switch between v7 and 8. You will be my witnesses (Isaiah 43:12, I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—I, and not some foreign god among you. “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God, and Isaiah 44:8, Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one).

Acts 1:9-11. At the end of His commission, Jesus’ physical work on earth was complete, thereafter He would be working through His apostles and His church.

Acts 1:12-14. They waited.

Acts 1:15-20. At some point between Jesus’ ascension and the Pentecost the entire group is assembled in the upper room. Apparent contradiction between this account of Judas’ death and that in Matthew 27:3-10.

Acts 1:21-23. Only two men met the requirements.

Acts 1:24-26. Why not Paul? He simply did not qualify.

Bottom Line: Scripture will be fulfilled. God’s will will be done! Will we be witnesses to the world as the apostles and disciples were or will we sit on our hands and leave it up to others.
