Jesus plus nothing equals Everything

Why become a Christian? What does one get out of becoming a Christian? Your answer?

2:1 Three groups. Believers at Colossae, believers at Laodicea (11 miles west of Colossae), and all beievers Paul had not met or taught. .

2:2 Purpose of Paul’s teaching. To encourage. To unite in spite of all the outside teachings and united in love for God and one another (see verse 3:14). To assure via knowing the Creator-Redeemer Jesus Christ. To inform or to know God’s mystery that is Christ Himself.

2:3 Content of teaching. Wisdom is in Christ. Genuine wisdom is in the person of Jesus the Christ. All wisdom and knowledge resides in Christ. Spiritual wisdom is spiritual wealth. The wisdom of Christ is hidden from non-believers who are still embracing their sin or who are wise in their own eyes, but revealed to believers (Colossians 1:26).

2:4 Warning, false teachers deceive and seek to persuade. The deceive when they teach anything outside of Christ. They persuade with deceit carefully packaged and presented like an unscrupulous salesman convincing you to buy something you do not want or need. Paul only sought to persuade using scriptural content and scriptural importance.

2:5 Protection from error. Unity via discipline and stability (firm in the faith) in spite of the heresies around.
2:6-7 Protection from error. Paul issues a clear command to walk in Christ. How to do this? 1) Walk in faith, 2) Walk in Christ (Him), 3) rooted in your faith in Him (not anything else), 4) built up in Him by building spiritual lives of success to glory of God vs carnal lives of failure to the shame of self, 5) established or strengthened in the faith by those who will teach the truth and only the truth, and 6) a walk of thankfulness, overflowing with thankfulness as the more they learn the more they love Jesus for what He has done for them.

2:8 Error described. See to it is a command to be on the alert, constant alert for error and false teachings. False teachers want to steal believers away from their spiritual family and sell them as slaves into false doctrine including all sorts of sin. How do they do this? 1) They use philosophy in the sense of love of knowledge of the world excluding Christ, excluding God; 2) they teach philosophy devoid of spiritual truth, power, and hope; 3) worldly philosophy or according to the traditions of men and here a legalistic approach to God; 4) elemental spiritual forces describing legalistic observances both Jewish and pagan; 5) anything that is centered anywhere other than on Christ.

2:9-10 In Christ’s person. For believers should be aware of any philosophy that is not according to Christ for He alone is the standard by which all religious claims much be judged.
9: The fullness of God in Christ like 1:19 with the addition all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. All the fullness tells us all that God is in His divine essence.
10: Unlike the heretics who promoted a spiritual caste system whereby an adherent could become more complete as he achieved certain goals. Instead Paul emphasized a total completeness is the possession of all believers and that completeness is only in Christ, the head over every power and authority.

2:11 Circumcision. Spiritual circumcision, not physical is what is important. Romans 2:29a No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.
2:12 Baptism. Spiritual baptism just as we have spiritual circumcision. in baptism literally reads in the baptism points to the one true baptism all believers receive at their conversion.
2:13 Quickening – made alive in Christ. There is no spiritual life apart from forgiveness. Mark 11:25 when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
2:14 Removal of the law. Christ’s death and resurrection ended the law when He said It is finished.
2:15 Triumph via the cross. Satan is now a defeated foe and Christ triumphed over them and we enjoy the triumphant march as we follow our spiritual King – Jesus.
