1 Samuel 19:1-24

1 Samuel 18:18 The friends we need are friends that are going to stand before God with usVintage message from October 11, 1998.

It’s hard to understand when God does things differently. And you know, when God does something different in my life, I’m looking for the difference to be good. I’m looking for the difference to be pleasant. I’m looking for the difference to be uplifting. But, you know, occasionally things come along in my life that God is doing that is different that is not pleasant at all… The Lord does not do things the way we want Him to do them — always. The Lord does not live to our expectations. He wants us to live to His expectations…

Sometimes, no matter how successful or unsuccessful we are, we will go through hard times. It doesn’t matter who you are, what part you play in life, you will go through hard times… Regardless of what your circumstances are, God will, from time to time, give us a friend that we can depend on… It’s good to have friends that we can turn to, especially when we’re in hard times… Friends are great, but you know what? Friendship can only go so far. We can only depend on friends to a certain point… The friends we need are the friends that are going to stand before God with us. The ones that are going to pray for us. The ones that are going to pray with us. The ones that are going to give us guidance in God’s Word…

When things start getting crazy in our life, when we do not understand what’s going on, we can flee from the responsibility, we can escape from the things that are tormenting us, and we can run out to the world and try to hide or…we can run to a friend who will pray with us. And understand, that when we enter in to that place of prayer the Holy Spirit takes control, and there is nothing…that is too powerful for the Holy Spirit to handle… Just because God’s enemy tries to bring torment to us and wreak havoc in our lives, it doesn’t stop the Holy Spirit. He is still working… The Holy Spirit is not out of control. The Holy Spirit is not perplexed. The Holy Spirit is not lost even if we are. When we find ourselves in those times of struggle and turmoil we turn to friends who have the relationship with the Lord, who are able at that point in their life to say, “Let me pray with you. Let’s turn to God’s Word and find out what His Word has to say. Let’s put this in the hands of the Creator of this universe.”
