Romans 10:21 NIV
21 But concerning Israel He says,“All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”
“If from this passage we once more look back upon the tenth and ninth chapters, it is manifest how little Paul ever designed to revert to a decretun (a collection of decisions and judgments in canon law.), absolutum (absolute), but meant to cast all blame upon the want of will in men, resisting the gracious will of God.
There are those who argue the will of God cannot be resisted. Paul clearly makes the opposite argument herein as he quotes from Isaiah 65:2 where I believe Paul intended us to look at least a bit further where:
2 All day long I have held out My hands to an obstinate people, who walk in ways not good,
pursuing their own imaginations—3a a people who continually provoke Me to My very face
Isaiah shows not only will they resist God, but they will go their own way pursuing their own imaginations or in other words they will pursue whatever they wish no matter how sinful or how terrible it may be to God thus Isaiah saying a people who continually provoke Me to My very face. In his own way Paul is making the point he made in Romans 1
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.
30b they invent ways of doing evil
32 Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
While Paul was obviously writing to the Roman church, the Roman believers, his words resonate with what we see going on in many parts of our so-called modern world today. Thinking of how little opposition is given today to the idea of drag queens reading to children aged 3-11 for a story hour in libraries is evocative of they invent ways of doing evil. Since so many little ones, young children, naturally believe in God one wonders who God will hold responsible especially considering what Jesus had to say
If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Matthew 18:6
Jesus died on the cross for our sins, gave us the free gift of Grace, and the promise of eternal life when He rose on the third day. Let us choose not to be a disobedient and obstinate people nor to in any way cause a little one to stumble.
(to obey is better than sacrifice / obedience is better than sacrifice)
* Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)
