Revelation 2:20-23

Revelation 2:20-23

20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads My servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. 21 I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
Revelation 2:20-23

Just in case you haven’t opened your Bibles, this is the chapter where Jesus begins addressing seven different churches. Here He is addressing the church of Thyatira

18 To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.
Revelation 2:18-19

Thyatira was located about 35 miles southeast of Pergamum. It was a small city, but on a major road of the Roman Empire so many trades people had settled there. Jesus is shown as He is with eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze bringing to mind the description of Him as He is in Matthew 17:2

His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

In verse 19 Jesus praises the Church in Thyatira, but the hammer comes down in the next four verses. For within the church a woman by the name of Jezebel was tolerated. The name Jezebel brings to mind Jezebel ofthe Old Testament. Ray Stedman writes

She was the wife of King Ahab of Israel, the Northern Kingdom, and she is particularly noted for having made the worship of the god Baal popular in Israel. Baal was a fertility god, and his worship involved immoral and licentious practices. There were temple prostitutes, both male and female, associated with the worship of Baal. It was Jezebel who spread that degraded worship widely among the ten tribes of Israel until it became one of the popular religions of the day.

This New Testament Jezebel not only had the name of the OT Jezebel, but the spirit as she led Jesus’ servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. Not only that He gave her time to repent and she refused. This implies at least some in the church addressed this and continued to address it as wrong, but insufficiently so such behavior continued in the church.

The result of such behavior? I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. And further if one had not repented I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Now before you get upset at I will strike her children dead, the children He is speaking of here are her followers. Realize He will know who is, who is not, and who was, but repented for I am He who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Looking into your hearts and minds He will know if you have truly repented or not.

Do we have churches like Thyatira today? Yes we do, we even have male and female Jezebels leading them stating any and all kinds of sexual behavior is permitted. It is not. Nor should such even be taught.
