Psalms 3:8     NKJV

Salvation belongs to the Lord. Your blessing is upon Your people. Selah

Comment

Monday evening Bible study, last night, found us examining Psalm 3 in detail where it is sandwiched between 2 Samuel 15 and 16 in the So That’s Why Bible. It is a chronological Bible so you will find Psalms placed where the authors think they best reflect the chronology of what is happening in the Bible. In this case, Psalm 3, they were spot on.

Anyway, instead of continuing my examination of believe or belief through the Bible I want to take a short detour and look at verse eight of Psalm 3 as shown above, especially the first part of the verse where it reads Salvation belongs to the Lord where only the word belongs is italicized which tells us it is added to, hopefully, make the verse more understandable. The NKJV is not alone in doing this as the following versions make clear.

ESV     Salvation belongs to the Lord

TLB     For salvation comes from God

NASB  Salvation belongs to the Lord

But I discovered looking at all the versions of this verse online many had Deliverance belongs to the Lord, others Victory, Liberation, and Rescue. Makes sense, right? After all, salvation is Victory, Liberation, or Rescue from an eternity in Hell.

This is one of the things I love about Bible studies in a group, usually small – 12 or less. Everyone brings in their own knowledge, their own perspective, their own study and preparation. I seldom leave without learning something new or some new application of something I thought I knew. That was the case here. Guess what the word for Salvation, Victory, Liberation, Rescue in this is? In Strong’s Dictionary it is H3444 Yeshuw’ah, better known as Joshua or Yeshua which becomes Jesus! Strong’s defines it as something saved, i.e. (abstractly) deliverance; hence, aid, victory, prosperity:—deliverance, health, help(-ing), salvation, save, saving (health), welfare.

If you look at the verse at the BlueLetterBible in Hebrew it simply says Yeshuw’ah Yehovah or Salvation is God or Salvation is of God or Salvation is from God or Salvation belongs to God.  Or in modern parlance Jesus is God or Jesus is of God and it becomes prophetic in nature. Great to know the Hebrew word for salvation when translated to the Greek becomes Jesus.

In the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible (NASB) we are told The primary meaning is to rescue from distress or danger. Later it also tells us salvation by God with reference to being rescued by Him from physical harm; also, being rescued from punishment due for sin. Clearly, we were all in danger of going to Hell without the salvation offered through Christ’s payment for our sins on the cross. Taking a look at the root word for Yeshuw’ah in the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible, yasha’ –  a verb, we learn the verb yasha’ (H3467) has the underlying idea is bringing to a place of safety or broad pasture as opposed to a narrow strait, symbolic of distress and danger.

Jesus delivers us from Hell and brings us to a place of eternal safety (heaven) when we accept His gift of Grace, the unmerited favor He provides for us. He paid a debt He did not owe, a debt we could never pay. At the beginning of Bible study we sang a song with the title He Paid A Debt He Did Not Owe which you may hear on Youtube here for the same version we sang. Jesus saved us by paying our debt, a debt He did not owe. Want to hear more about then listen to the August 2, 2020 message on that from Matthew 18.

Well I hope you have enjoyed this excursion from a Bible study I attended on Monday evening. Also, I hope you are encouraged to attend a Bible study as well if you not already doing so.
