Psalm 34:4 NIV
4 I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:4 NOG
4 I went to Yahweh for help. He answered me and rescued me from all my fears.
We are provided no context for this Psalm other than a statement that it is a Psalm of David’s and he wrote it of or for the time when he pretended to be insane before Achish, king of Gath. We read of this in 1 Saul 21:10-15 where he had fled from Saul and fearful for his life pretended to be insane and was not harmed.
To act in such a way David was in great fear and some believe he sinned by acting insane, but there is no evidence of this in scripture or in this Psalm. Instead, there is great praise for God throughout. In fact the next verse reads, Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame. Trapp writes what David’s thoughts might have been then as, Even when I was in the enemies’ hands, and playing my pranks as a mad-man amongst them, I prayed secretly and inwardly.
The key is that David went to the Lord in prayer and trusted in Him. And God answered him! When He answered him, He rescued David from all of his fears. I like the idea of rescuing David from his fears as it is well known fears can paralyze or trap us so that we need to be rescued or delivered from our fears. Note too, David identifies the fears as his fears. They were not from God. This is not altogether different from those who are forgiven for their sins when the repent and accept Christ as Lord and Savior. Many times they have sins they believe cannot or will not forgive which is simply not true as Jesus paid the price for all of our sins.
Knowing this verse should lead us to turn to God whenever our fears seem to overwhelm us. He is to be trusted to answer us and deliver us from our fears. It surely beats sitting somewhere trembling or curled up in a ball crying. Let us instead seek God and cry out to Him for help. He is our Deliverer!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Help me to remember to always turn to you when I am fearful. Help me to do that so often it becomes a wonderful habit. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
