7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
In this first chapter of Joshua, the Lord is speaking to Joshua, reassuring him He will be with him as He was with Moses.
5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
The key to this, however, is to Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Joshua was neither afraid or discouraged and he carried on following God’s directions.
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”
Joshua also addressed the the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh letting them know they could remain on the East side of the Jordan as Moses had promised, but also as Moses had required the fighting men would have to cross the Jordan ahead of all the other Israelites to take the land for Israel. It is interesting to read their response, how they would follow him as they followed Moses.
16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!”
The would obey! Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Plus Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Then they echoed the Lord ‘s words to Joshua Only be strong and courageous! Just as Moses had been a strong and courageous leader they wanted the same from Joshua.
In the next chapter we find Joshua sent two spies to look over the land. When they returned
They said to Joshua, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.”
In Joshua 3 we read of another Great Miracle by the L when Israel was ready to cross the Jordan. Just as the waters parted so Israel could escape from Pharaoh and Egypt, so now the waters of the Jordan would be parted so everyone could cross on dry land in preparation of taking the promised land.
The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.
Before the priests and the ark left the Jordan, Joshua had 12 men, one from each tribe, reenter the dry land of the Jordan and bring back a stone to build an alter to remind future generations they crossed the Jordan on dry land. Then Joshua commanded the priests to come out of the Jordan and No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before Joshua 4:17.
It’s Friday, remember to Go To Church and while meditating on how God is in the business of miracles.
