John 6:34-40     NIV

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.

36 But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe.

37 All those the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never drive away.

38 For I have come down from heaven not to do My will but to do the will of Him who sent Me.

39 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.

40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Yesterday we ended with verse 34 and today we begin with it. They want to have the bread Jesus described in v33, For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the worldThe first thing Jesus does is to declare, I am the bread of life and by implication He is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

In case they missed what He was saying He continues with, Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirstyThat is all well and good, but He follows up with a rebuke to all of them, But as I told you, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. Jesus is trying to lift them from the material world of bread to the eternal-spiritual world of bread. It did not matter that He had fed 5,000 previously, they were still unable to put their trust in Him.

Still, if they came to Him, they would be safe with Him as He does the will of His Father. For those who could make the leap and trust in Him, believe in Him, For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. Believe in Me and have eternal life! This is a promise rejected by the Sadducees who did not believe in an afterlife. We have to look to the Son of God and believe in Him, put all of our trust in Him so that we will have eternal life.

The people around Jesus wanted eternal life and eternal bread in this life. They were having a terrible time making up their minds. But those who did so, believed and took the promise of eternal life with them. For those who would not believe, What they wanted, he would not give; what he offered, they would not receive. (Bruce)

I am struck by Jesus’ boldness in front of the Pharisees and scribes in declaring, I am the bread of life. First of all He uses the I am’ and goes on to declare the bread of life.’ There is no denying what He is saying about who He is and Who sent Him.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father – Thank you for the wonderful gift of your Son. Thank you for you love and mercy so that our sins are forgiven. Your love and mercy knows no bounds, and all you ask is that we believe and accept the free gift of Grace. In Jesus name. Amen
