John 6:27-34     NIV

27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

28 Then they asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”

29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.”

30 So they asked Him, “What sign then will You give that we may see it and believe You? What will You do?

31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Comment

This section of chapter six begins in verse 25 and ends with verse 59 and they are all about Jesus as the bread of life. In our verses for today, Jesus begins with Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.

This is happening the day after He had fed 5,000 men (and an unknown number of women and children) from five small barley loaves and two small fish (6:9) after giving thanks for the loaves and then for the fish (6:11).

In the interim Jesus had first withdrawn to a mountain (6:15) and later that night walked on water to join His disciples as they were attempting to cross the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum (6:16-21). Somehow those who had been fed figured out they must all be in Capernaum and sailed over there and asked Him how He got over there?

Jesus did not answer their question. Instead He taught them saying (beginning with v26), Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval. That was when they asked Him a question He would answer. The question was, What must we do to do the works God requires? What a great question. Not unlike what is often asked today, What must we do to be saved? Jesus’ answer to the original question is the same as the answer to the question today, The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.

Not much has changed in 2,000 years. People think they must earn forgiveness, they have to earn their way into heaven. They cannot. Let that sink in for a moment. They cannot and we cannot earn forgiveness. All they can do is what we can do, believe in the One He has sent. Like them, we must put our trust in the One He has sent. We know what they did not yet know, He paid the price for our sins on the cross and because of that we have the offer of the gift of Grace.

Because He had yet to die on the cross and rise on the third day, they asked What sign then will You give that we may see it and believe You? What will You do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Did you catch that? They wanted and needed a sign before they could believe Jesus. They had already forgotten or dismissed how He had fed 5,000. The question is, did they really want to believe, did they really want to accept Jesus was the One sent by God? So, they brought up the manna given to their ancestors who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

Jesus’ answer is a rebuke making sure they knew it was not Moses who provided the manna or bread from heaven, but God Himself. Thus His answer was, Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. It was no surprise to Jesus when they replied, Sir always give us this bread, as this would supposedly be the sign so they could believe. Tomorrow we will look at what Jesus then said.

Prayer: Almighty God – Thank you for preserving your Word so we might know of Jesus and that He is truly the One You sent from heaven to pay the price for our sins out of your incredible love and mercy towards us. You gave us a gift of Grace we could not earn, cannot earn, but only accept. Your love and mercy know no bounds.  Amen.
