Jeremiah 32:39-41 ESV
39 I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever, for their own good and the good of their children after them. 40 I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of Me in their hearts, that they may not turn from Me. 41 I will rejoice in doing them good, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all My heart and all My soul.
Jeremiah 32:39-41 LEB
39 And I will give to them one heart and one way, to revere Me forever, for good to them, and to their children after them. 40 And I will make with them an everlasting covenant that I will not turn away from them, My doing good to them, and My reverence I will put in their hearts so that they will not turn aside from Me. 41 And I will rejoice over them to do good to them, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness with all My heart, and with all My inner self.”
Today as we start the week, we continue with the same covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31 and found in verse forty above. We have two versions of the verses today so we might see how the word translated as fear may also be translated as revere in verses thirty-nine and forty – both are correct translations. If, as I believe, the covenant is with Jesus and through Him a Gift of Grace, then the word revere seems more fitting.
We have three mentions of the heart above with two being the people who God is making a covenant with and one describing His heart “with all my heart and all my inner self.” Let’s look first at verse thirty-nine and the reference to one heart and one way to revere me forever. What way might that be? Jesus provides the answer.
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17
Next we have I will put the fear of Me in their hearts or My reverence I will put in their hearts with the purpose of making sure Israel (and we) will not turn away from Him. How will this be done? Likely via the Holy Spirit for
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1
Finally we come to God stating I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all My heart and all My soul. His great desire for us is shown here as it is with all of His heart. In addition it is with all of His soul. Frankly I was surprised to read God has a soul, but discovered the Bible has numerous references to His soul, a few are shown here and there are more. Bottom line is God has an incredible love for mankind which He created in His image. Incredible love, thus all of His heart and all of His soul is involved in His new covenant with us.
It’s Monday, have a Great Week! Take time to contemplate on God’s great love for us, how He keeps His word, and the Great Blessing of His Son in our lives.
