Isaiah 42:9-11

Isaiah 42:9-11

23 Which of you will listen to this or pay close attention in time to come?
24 Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers?
Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned?
For they would not follow His ways; they did not obey His law.
25 So He poured out on them His burning anger, the violence of war.
It enveloped them in flames, yet they did not understand;
it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.

There are three sections to this chapter, The Servant of the Lord (verses 1-9), Song of Praise to the Lord (verses 10-17) and Israel Blind and Deaf (verses 18-25). Our verses today are taken from the third section and the last verse with heart as the last word.

So God’s burning anger is displayed in the violence of war and it was because they would not listen or pay close attention to what He had to say. Further they continued to sin against the Lord while refusing to follow His ways and obey His law.

Thus He went about teaching Israel a lesson, but they did not learn and take it to heart. Today it is not much different, only the lessons (so far) come to us as individuals and we sometimes learn and often times do not.
Sunday the lesson was on 2 Thessalonians 1 where we learned Jesus will return

8 with burning flame giving punishment to those who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus

Why is this? It is because the free Gift of Grace is offered to everyone. Not something to be earned, it can only be accepted with great wonder at such a gift. Yep many (most?) refuse it. Why? Pride, because they believe they know best for their lives and Jesus does not. They are incredibly wrong when they did not take the offering of this free gift to heart.

Today is Memorial Day in the United States when we honor the memory of those who were the defenders of our country, our freedoms, and our lives with their own. Some call it a holiday or a day to celebrate, but not I as I am humbled by their sacrifices for those who came before me and those who will come after me. When I think of all that they did knowing their death was very likely to occur I am reminded of what Jesus said

Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13

It’s Monday, have a great week and when you are able to do so, share the knowledge of God’s wondrous free Gift of Grace.
