Hebrews 11:8 NIV
8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
This chapter of Hebrews is about faith and how By faith so much was done. The first occurrence is in verse three where we read of creation By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Some versions such as the KJV have Through faith, but no matter the version this is a chapter about By faith which is mentioned well over a dozen times.
Each example of By faith is an incredible example of faith in action. Our verse of the day has Abraham obeying when he was still yet Abram not even knowing where God was leading him. By faith he trusted God and went! Later of Sarai, Abram’s wife, it was said 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered Him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. However, because she was so old (90) she initially laughed at the idea of having a child at her age not to mention Abram was ten years older. Still, she gave birth at the age of 91 and they named their son Isaac meaning laughter. Sarai became Sarah – princess and Abram became Abraham – father of many.
Only one more of the By faith verses directly addresses obedience and it involves the prostitute Rahab where 31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. Not only was she not killed along with the other inhabitants of Jericho when the walls fell down, but her entire family was spared. Read Joshua chapters two through six. Most commentaries believe she purified herself and became Jewish by marriage to Salmon, the father of Boaz who married Ruth, originally a Moabite who also chose to follow the God of the Jews and became Jewish. Boaz and Ruth had a son Obed who was the father of Jesse who was the father of David. Thus Rahab and Ruth are both in the lineage of Jesus.
Obedience By faith can have wonderful rewards, the most important becoming sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father when By faith we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Disobedience because of a lack of faith can have the most terrible of penalties, eternal separation from God in hell.
As we approach the celebration of Jesus’ birth I hope you will spend some time this weekend following the dictum found in chapter ten of Hebrews 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Of course the easiest way to do this is to meet together in a church where you can share worship and prayer as well as time in the study of God’s word.
Have a Great Weekend, finish all of your Christmas shopping, and remember to go to church as you look forward to celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior – Jesus the Christ.
