Galatians 3:22 NIV
22 But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.
Galatians 3:22 KJV
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
First, be aware Scripture here refers to the Law as noted in the Complete Jewish Bible, the Orthodox Jewish Bible, and the Phillips NT. Next, if your bible version has concluded all under sin as in the KJV above, it is helpful to know, It literally means ‘shut up,’ and is to be taken in its literal sense of confining, thus we are to conceive of a vast prison-house in which mankind is confined (MacLaren’s Expositions) very much as in the NIV above.
While the NIV has under the control of sin and the KJV has all under sin the NIV may be considered the more accurate because it is sin that can control one’s life. However, all under sin is to be considered very accurate as well when we look at MacLaren’s remarks, the Apostle passes at once to another metaphor when he goes on to say ‘under sin.’ What a moment before had presented itself to his vivid imagination as a great dungeon is now represented as a heavy weight, pressing down upon those beneath; if, indeed, we are not, perhaps, rather to think of the low roof of the dark dungeon as weighing on the captives. With this insight, the KJV would be preferred, as who has not felt the burden of sin as a heavy and oppressive weight in their life?
Knowing scripture has driven men into thinking it is scripture or revelation that makes us sinners. No, but it does make us more guilty as we are aware of our great sin and guilt. As dismal and terrible as that is Paul does not end there. Instead, we see a promise from God’s word or as Paul writes it as a result of our miserable status, we have what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Imagine yourself in that dirty dark dank cell trapped with a low heavy ceiling and suddenly that clear, clean beam of light shines inside that show a path to freedom. A path defined as faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe. Through our belief and faith our chains of sin are cast off, the prison doors are opened wide and the prison is left far behind.
Liberty, freedom from the chains of sin. That is what is offered through the grace and salvation we receive through our faith and belief in the good news of Jesus Christ. It is Jesus who frees us, who breaks us out of the prison of sin, who promises us eternal life, only Jesus.
In summary: All sin imprisons, all men are thusly imprisoned in the dungeon of sin, unless they find their way out through faith in Jesus Christ – the only way out.
Prayer: Father God – Thank you so much for showing me the way out of the prison of sin. It is wonderful to know Jesus paid a ransom so I might be free if only I would believe. I believe. – In Jesus name. Amen.
