Ephesians 1:13-14        NIV

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of His glory.

These two verses like so many in the Bible are simply amazing. Look at verse 13, When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit. Of course, this followed, And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. By the hearing of the message of salvation and then believing we are saved!

This is very similar to the ABC’s of salvation. With the ABC’s we first have to Admit we are sinners in need of salvation, this comes from hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Next comes the Believing where we do believe He died for our sins on the cross and rose again on the third day defeating death. Then comes Calling on His name as our Lord and Savior. If we are wise, we will then find a church where we will be Discipled by hearing and studying the Word of God, followed by a desire to Evangelize, to share the Good News. Eventually we end us with Fellowship with other believers as well. And that is as far as my ABCs can take me.

Back to our two verses: When you believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit. This terminology would be common to Ephesus as it was a shipping port. Any shipping port would have containers marked with the seal of their owner or the person it was being shipped to for delivery. This is not unlike how we ship cargo all over the world today. Each container is marked with the seal or mark of its owner.

As we read a bit further, we find, we are marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of His glory. Want to by a car for $2,000 but you have to go the bank or credit union to get a loan, what do you do to hold the car for you? You make a deposit or provide ‘earnest money’ to the owner to hold the car for you for a specified time limit. While this analogy tells us what a deposit is via the Holy Spirit, we should know there is no time limit on this deposit. Instead, the deposit is there until we leave this temporary earthly home for our eternal home in heaven with Jesus. That is our inheritance when we are redeemed, eternal life with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit along with all our other saved brothers and sisters. We are sealed as God’s possession for which He deserves praise of His glory for such an incredible promise of salvation . A promise made out of love and mercy through His Son Jesus the Christ.

We neither deserved nor earned our salvation. We simply made a choice to believe following the ABCs, but that is the extent of what we did, we believed. Many, perhaps most, choose not to believe which will be to their eternal regret. God has chosen to make the gift of grace through His Son available to everyone, to anyone, who will believe. It is amazing how prideful men can be in denying this gift of salvation to themselves.

Prayer: Heavenly Father God – Salvation for believing. Thank You. Your Grace and mercy overwhelm me. Thank You for the blessings that follow accepting this wonderful free gift. – In Jesus name. Amen.
