Daniel 10:12 NIV
12 Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.
Who is talking to Daniel? Why is he telling Daniel not to be afraid? Who or where were Daniel’s words heard? Why did the speaker come in response to them? All serious pertinent questions. The first is the one we will try to answer today and the rest on Monday.
Why are we only addressing the first question, “Who is talking to Daniel?” Because if we go back to verses five and six, we have this description of the person addressing Daniel, I looked up and there before me was a man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like topaz, his face like lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. What’s the big deal you may ask, now we have a description of the person speaking to Daniel? Well, I would like you to compare that description to John’s description of Jesus in Revelation 1:13-15 & 16b, [A]mong the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to His feet and with a golden sash around His chest. The hair on His head was white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of rushing waters. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.
The descriptions are amazingly similar leading some to believe the person addressing Daniel was the pre-incarnate Jesus. Some believe otherwise that the person addressing Daniel was an angel. While the common descriptions are compelling the follow verse (13) raises a valid question, However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia was opposing me for twenty-one days. But Michael, one of the leading princes, came to help me, because I was left there with the kings of Persia NET. The question is, “Would the pre-incarnated Jesus require help while the prince of the Persian kingdom resisted Jesus for 21 days? I do not know, but it helps to know (figure out) the prince of the kingdom of Persia was a fallen angel doing the bidding of Satan while Michael was a high-level angel (one of the leading princes) who had remained faithful to God.
What was the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposing the individual seeking to address Daniel? Was it some other task that Michael took over? While it is difficult to imagine anyone opposing the pre-incarnate Jesus, it would be useful to remember Pharaoh resisted God until a plague was unleashed on all the firstborn throughout Egypt. However, even with this in mind there is no solid evidence it was an angel addressing Daniel or the pre-incarnate Jesus doing so. What is important is that Daniel listened and believed and followed the directions he received.
Bottom Line: Whether God speaks to us directly or though one of His messengers or His Holy Word, we would do well to listen and listen carefully as Daniel did.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Let my heart always be open to hear what You are saying to me no matter how you speak to me. Let me listen fully and openly, always choosing to follow You. – In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
