Christmas Day 2019

December 25, 2019 – Wednesday

Christmas Day

Okay, it’s not daylight yet, but technically it is Christmas day at 3:40 a.m.

It is going to be a great day. I finished my wrapping about 2:30 a.m., 30 minutes ahead of schedule. In a short while this email will be done and I will sleep four or five or six hours before I get up to take care of the honey do’s. Oh wait first we will have coffee and open gifts. No, got that wrong too. First we will give thanks that Jesus humbled Himself and took on the form of a defenseless baby so that we might have salvation through His sacrifice on the cross when He  paid the price for our sins.

We seldom truly think on how much God must love us to send His only begotten Son to die for our sins. Jesus had to leave His home in heaven to live among us as a man so He could offer us the free Gift of Grace. This is why we should celebrate His birthday and His birth. In fact we should celebrate His birth all year long as His birth is an incredible statement of God’s love for each and every one of us.

If we read of His birth in Luke chapter two we also get to meet the first evangelists. No, I am not kidding. Get this initial description of our future evangelists.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Initially they were terrified, maybe we would be as well if An angel of the Lord appeared to us, and the glory of the Lord shone around us. But then what happened?

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Now after that I would expect them to be even more terrified, but because the angels left and returned to heaven they said to one another “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”  Lots of bravado there, not knowing what they would find. Still off they went and found Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus laying in a manager. Curiosity satisfied you might think that was the end of it. If so you would be wrong.

Instead our young shepherds became our very first evangelists. 17 When they had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

With this in mind, I have another question for you and for me – knowing what these younlg shepherds did – what will we do to share the word about how Jesus has affected our lives through His incredible, almost unbelievable, free Gift of Grace. He humbles Himself and then offers this free Gift of Grace. Free! No other gift we receive this day can compare.

Let us rejoice in Him and His free Gift of Grace and find some way to share the Good news of what He has to offer. Merry Christmas to one and all!
