Song of Solomon

Song of Songs 4:9

Song of Songs 4:9 NIV 9 You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. Song of Songs 4:9 ESV 9 You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace. Song of Songs 4:9 EXB 9 My sister [ an ancient term of endearment], my bride; you…

Song of Songs 3:9-11

9 King Solomon made for himself the carriage; he made it of wood from Lebanon. 10 Its posts he made of silver, its base of gold. Its seat was upholstered with purple, its interior inlaid with love. Daughters of Jerusalem, 11 come out, and look, you daughters of Zion. Look on King Solomon wearing a crown, the crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding, the day his heart rejoiced. In the verse of the…

Song of Songs 3:1-4

1 All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him. 2 I will get up now and go about the city, through its streets and squares; I will search for the one my heart loves. So I looked for him but did not find him. 3 The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. “Have you seen the one my heart loves?”…

Goodbye to Ecclesiastes

Never before had I taken a close look at Ecclesiastes and what it had to say. I considered it the most negative book of the Bible, not so much anymore after learning about the Hebrew word hevel and its many translations. Of course vanity, pointless, meaningless, and futile are all somewhat if not very negative. The literal translation possibilities though are different: smoke, vapor, or mere breath – things that are real, but cannot be grasped. I suggest reading through…

Ecclesiastes 11:7-10

7 The light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. 8 For if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in all of them! Let him remember that the days of the darkness will be many—all that is coming is vanity! 9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth! Follow the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes—but…

Ecclesiastes 10:2

The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. This is not a political verse in any way shape or form, not at all. Instead it is pointing to the reality that most people (90+ percent) are right handed. In fact many versions of this verse read as follows The heart of a wise man is at his right hand: but the heart of a fool is at his left hand.…

Ecclesiastes 9:7-8

7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. Once again context is needed and here we will look at the following verses 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is…

Ecclesiastes 9:3

This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. Today we are looking a verse requiring context in a chapter with the following heading or title A Common Destiny for All in the NIV, Death Comes to All in the ESV, The Same Fate-Death-Awaits Everyone in the LEB,…

Ecclesiastes 8:11-12

11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. From the news alone, we all know of crimes where sentences are not quickly carried out. This is even true, especially true, of murder cases with death…

Ecclesiastes 8:4-6

4 Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?” 5 Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure. 6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery. Today we will look at verse five in chapter eight with few more verses added in for context. However, before I go…

Ecclesiastes 7:25-26

Ecclesiastes 7:25-26 NIV 25 So I turned my mind to understand, to investigate and to search out wisdom and the scheme of things and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the madness of folly. 26 I find more bitter than death the woman who is a snare, whose heart is a trap and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner she will ensnare. Ecclesiastes 7:25-26 EXB 25 I studied and tried…

Ecclesiastes 7:21-22

Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 NIV 21 Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you— 22 for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others. Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 EXB 21 Don’t ·listen [L give your heart] to everything people say, or you might hear your servant insulting you. 22 ·You know [L Your heart knows] that many times you have insulted others. Including the EXB version once again for the literal information…
