1 Timothy 4:10 NIV
10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
Paul effectively asks the question Why do we labor and strive in this verse at the beginning. Then he provides the answer, because we have put our hope in the living God! Then he goes on to describe the living God, Jesus, the Savior of all people. Then concludes with this detail, is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
A quick non-discerning read would make one think Jesus saves everyone, believer and non-believer alike. But that is not the case. His will, His purpose, is that all men should and could be saved. He made full and complete payment for all mankind’s sins on the cross. Titus 2:11 tells us explicitly, For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. However, John 1:12-13 says, Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
We who believe, we have put our hopes in Him. Jesus did not die on the cross for the sins of a few, but for the sins of everyone. He did this so anyone who would come to Him repent of their sins and believe, they would be saved and have eternal life. He would be their Lord and Savior. This is the nature of His universal salvation; it is for anyone who would believe. Salvation is denied to no one who believes. Jesus waits with incredible patience, literally until a person’s dying breath, for that person to believe. Paul called himself the worst of sinners who was shown mercy so that, 1 Timothy 1:16b, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in Him and receive eternal life.
Through Paul, Jesus is saying He does not care what your sin is. Come to Him, believe, and be saved. Paul’s message to Timothy is this is why we labor and strive and why he should do the same. It is also directed at all believers to labor and strive to share this good news where we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for reminding us that Jesus salvation is for everyone, for anyone who will come to Him and believe. We are not special except that we believe and that is available to everyone without exception. You have blessed us mightily along with all who will believe. – In Jesus Name. Amen.
