1 Peter 1:22  NIV

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

First question that should come to mind is what is the truth that is being obeyed which results in the purifying of one’s self?  MacLaren’s Expositions states The first thought that is suggested to me from this expression–obedience to the truth–is that the revelation of God in Jesus Christ is, as its ultimate intention, meant to be obeyed. Barnes’ Notes provide a little more depth in stating In obeying the truth – That is, your yielding to the requirements of truth, and to its fair influence on your minds, has been the means of your becoming pure. The truth here referred to is, undoubtedly, that which is revealed in the gospel – the great system of truth respecting the redemption of the world.

But it is within the context of the preceding and succeeding verses we gain even greater insight into our verse of the day.

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.  23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.” [Isaiah 40:6-8]   And this is the word that was preached to you.

The truth Peter was speaking about was their faith – and our faith – in the Good News of Jesus Christ. What are we to do with the purification [sanctification] from obeying the truth? It’s rather simple and the answer is in the verse, we are to sincerely love each other and do so deeply from the heart. Jameson-Fausset-Brown adds Faith purifies the heart as giving it the only pure motive, love to God. Sincere love is not love in word only, but in action as well.

How do we do that? I don’t know, but think it will help to keep in mind Jesus words to Nicodemus as the greatest example of love known to mankind.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.

Today is Friday and I hope you have a Great Weekend and recover from the excesses we indulge in over Christmas. Also hope you will find your way to back to church as well. Many find time to go just before Christmas, bur for some reason cannot find time after Christmas. Why would that be?
