The Day After Christmas

1 Peter 1:14  NIV

14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

Comments

Ellicott’s Commentary tells us As obedient children—Literally means as children of obedience—children, i.e., in the sense of relationship, not of age. If we look at this verse in context this becomes clear.

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” [Leviticus 11:44,45; 19:2]

While Leviticus was written about God the Father, these verses were written about God the Son, Jesus Christ. Peter is showing us truths that applied to the Father also apply to the Son for they are one. Or as Jesus answered the disciples and then Phillip in John 14:

If you really know Me, you will know My Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Thus Peter is saying Jesus is Holy and He wants us to be holy as He is Holy. And holy is defined in Strong’s as sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):—(most) holy (one, thing), saint. Okay that describes Jesus, but not us. Instead it describes what we are to seek after in our own lives.

It is the day after Christmas and I wonder how quickly people will forget this holiday (holy day) is really about Jesus. One way to keep Him fresh in our hearts and minds is to spend time in scripture and prayer. Today’s verse and its context tell us as Christians we no longer live in ignorance and to no longer conform to the evil desires we had when we lived in ignorance. Now though with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at His coming we are to be As obedient children and to Be holy, because Jesus is holy.

Now that is something to keep in mind in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead as we do our best to live out our Christian lives as obedient children no longer living in ignorance.

Keep Christmas and Christ alive in your hearts and minds as you are living our lives as obedient children.
